Great books are about more than good
plotting, likable characters, lots of conflict, and skillful writing. For a
book to really grab a reader, the author must make an emotional connection with
that reader. Otherwise, even though the reader may enjoy the book, it won't be
one he'll remember. It won't be one he'll talk about. And it won't be one he'll
recommend to to others. In this class, you'll learn various dramatic techniques
that will help you stir your reader's feelings and make him feel he has an
emotional stake in the story's outcome.
-
Making your reader care: the dramatic
journey
-
Crafting powerful scenes that accomplish
what you envision
-
How sequels help you involve your reader
-
Psychic distance: one of your most powerful
tools
-
Suspense and tension on every page
-
Various emotional responses and ways to
elicit them

Here's what a few students have had to say about Pat's writing classes: "I've taken a number of classes over the years, most online, and I get something out of all of them. But I honestly have to say I think I got more out of this class than any of them. You have a way of explaining concepts that I've known about for years, but never consciously worked on because I think I wasn't sure what they meant." Pat Brown, award winning author of the L.A. crime novels (commenting on Sisters in Crime Dramatic Techniques Master Class) "I've been lurking and only did a few of the assignments, but I wanted to let you know that you've given us a lot of material to learn and absorb. Some of the other on-line classes I've taken haven't even come close to amount of content in this class. Thank you for making this such a wonderful learning experience! Your in-depth knowledge and gentle guidance makes you a fabulous teacher and coach!" Anne Lum "If you're seeing flashes of light, it may be because light bulbs are going on all over the place as a result of your excellent lessons and coaching. I'd heard of sequels before but never understood how they related to scene structure or what exactly they were or how exactly they function in the process of putting fiction together. This class is blowing my mind, and I can feel my writing starting to come together in important ways that I never understood how to do before. And it makes an amazing difference. Just saying thank you isn't enough, but it's a start. Thank you so much for all the ways you're helping us become better writers. I may be a slow learner, but feel I'm actually starting to get some of this stuff, and it's amazing." Dolores Kester, (Sisters in Crime Dramatic Techniques Master Class) "Thank you, Pat! This class has been wonderful. The information you've provided has been so well organized and concise, and your responses to our efforts quick, clear and kind. I feel I've acquired a set of excellent tools for improving my work. The class has been a joy -- I can't believe it's over so soon!" Susan Schreyer (Sisters in Crime Dramatic Techniques Master Class) "I have really enjoyed this class and the lessons have become treasures that I will look back to in the future. I do feel slightly overwhelmed at the moment with information but I know that once the dust settles I will be grateful to have every ounce of information you so willingly shared with us. The personal feedback is something that I have most certainly grown from." Laura James "I learned so much from Patricia Kay's course. Her lessons were helpful, easy to understand, and relevant. Pat's responses to questions and subsequent discussions made me feel as if I was actually sitting in a classroom with an instructor who cared about me and my work. I'd highly recommend any course that she teaches." Christine Wenger, author of THE COWBOY WAY and NOT YOUR AVERAGE COWBOY, Silhouette Special Edition "Even though I am a published author, I know there is always much more a writer can learn. I took one of Pat Kay's online courses and highly recommend her classes to anyone looking to improve their writing. I came away with more helpful information than I expected, thanks to Ms. Kay's ability to teach the craft in interesting and easy-to-understand lessons. Her talent, enthusiasm, and love of writing made being one of her students a true learning experience. You can't go wrong with a Patricia Kay course." Lorralee Lillibridge, author of AN ACCIDENTAL COWBOY, Silhouette Special Edition "I've never had such personalized help before. Your lectures, the resources, the book suggestions. I couldn't have asked for more. I'll definitely be recommending this class to others." Leslie Marshman "Thanks, Pat, for the fabulous class. I learned tons and gained a lot of confidence in the process. I'm going to have to buy all the books as well. Great, great resources. I appreciate all your help with my project as well. It's wonderful to get personalized feedback. As a teacher, I know how much time and energy it takes to make comments on someone's writing. Much appreciated."
